The East African Community (EAC) region is abundant in diverse renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, and bioenergy; unlocking their full potential depends on targeted investments, enabling policies, and strong regional cooperation. In collaboration with the Ministries of Energy and with support from the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE) held national consultation workshops in four partner states to review the draft Regional Renewable Energy Policy and Framework for the Transboundary Movement (TBM) of Renewable Energy Products across the East African Community. The first workshop was conducted in partnership with Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure from 9th to 10th December 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda. This was followed by a two-day workshop organised with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Mogadishu, from 14 to 15 December. Subsequently, on 16 and 17 December, workshops were held in collaboration with Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, respectively.
These national consultations brought together stakeholders from each partner state’s energy sector to develop a national position on the draft regional renewable energy policy and TBM framework, ensuring alignment with national priorities, regional plans, and global standards. These national consultation workshops will be succeeded by a regional harmonisation meeting and a validation workshop before progressing to gazetting. The EAC Renewable Energy Policy and the Framework to Advance the Transboundary Movement of Renewable Energy Products and Services will play a vital role in promoting regional cooperation and coordination in harnessing renewable energy for sustainable economic growth, socio-economic transformation of the East African Community, and facilitating cross-border trade in renewable energy products and services.
