MEETMET Kick off meeting : A new partnership between RCREEE and MEDENER

May 18, 2018-Barcelona, Spain: The launching meeting of the Mitigation Enabling Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Region (MEETMED) project has been hosted at the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in Barcelona, Spain.  

   
 
RCREEE together with the Mediterranean Association of the National Agencies for Energy Conservation (MEDENER) are awarded the grant contract with the European Commission, DG Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR). MEETMET, the 2-year project, aims to foster energy transition at country level throughout all Southern Eastern Mediterranean countries (SEM) under the European Neighborhood Instrument (ENI). Also, MEETMET intends to assess energy efficiency and renewable energy sources (RES) strategies and policies, attract responsible and sustainable investment and support Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REEE) Platform launched in COP 22.
 
The event gathered representatives from the European Commission, MEDENER, RCREEE, UfM, Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME) and national energy agencies from Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
 
Mr. Jorge Borrego, acting Secretary General of the UfM, Mr Cyril Dewaleyne, Programme Officer at DG NEAR –European Commission, Mr Ahmed Badr, Executive Director of RCREEE, Mr Dario Chello, President of MEDENER, and MsHouda   Allal, General Director of OME,  expressed their appreciation forthe official start of the MEETMED project. They shared their commitment to enhance energy cooperation and sector governance among all the Mediterranean countries, facilitate and mobilize investment that would generate new job opportunities, and to increase the outreach to investors, consumers and donors. 

RCREEE Tecnical Director, Dr. Maged Mahmoud explained the measures to assess and support economic growth and job creation. Besides, RCREEE Operations and Member States relations manager Mrs. Noha Gamal  gave an overview of events  supporting the UFM REEE platform.    

The project contract was signed signature on April 20,2018 by RCREEE Executive Director, Dr. Ahmed Badr who stated “It a great opportunity to foster European and Southern Mediterranean partners cooperation to advance their RES practices and showcase international cooperation on RE & EE”. Following the opening statements, attendees presented the project's insutments and objectives.
